Abstract

Background: Diabetes is a disease whose main factors are lifestyle-related, such as diet and activity habits. This risk will increase in individuals with uncontrolled hypertension, lack of exercise/physical activity, and an unhealthy lifestyle. Most type 2 DM patients still have difficulty in self-management. Motivational interviewing and family support help improve self-management for sufferers. However, little research has examined the influence of motivational interviewing and family support to enhance the self-management of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
Aims: This research aims to identify the effectiveness of motivational interviewing and support for self-management in patients. Type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Method: This research used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-post-test design approach on 60 respondents. They were divided into two intervention groups, namely the motivational interviewing group (n = 30) and the family support group (n = 30). Testing the difference in average self-management scores in each group using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test.
Results: The results showed a significant difference in self-management scores between the motivational interviewing group, an average increase of 9.8 points (p = 0.000), and the family support group, an average increase of 6.8 points (p = 0.000). Significantly, motivational interviewing is more effective than family support in improving self-management in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
Implications for practice: Motivational interviewing and family support can be recommended as an independent action in nursing care services for type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
